LAST HOPE, INC. is a small ANIMAL RESCUE and REHABILITATION organization. We are NOT A SHELTER. We have 1 small Adoption Center for our dogs, 1 small Adoption Center for our cats and donated cage space in local pet stores. Please see addresses above. We do not take personally owned pets.

Hi, I'm Allie, a 1 year old super sweet kitty!

My foster mom says I'm such a "people" cat, I wonder why she calls me that? Maybe that's because she knows, I follow her wherever she goes.

I'm a faithful friend. I'll always be at your side, let the love I will show you be the guide.

Please take me home to the place I belong, so I can have my place in your heart. I know that will be just the start.

Are you the one that's meant for me, you'll think I'm so awesome, just wait and see!

I was found in a warehouse with 6 little kittens all covered in dust and dirt on all of our "mittens".

We were lucky to be rescued my kittens and I, they were all adopted and I have been waiting, so don't pass me by!

LAST HOPE, INC. is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization that is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of death-due pound, stray and abandoned animals.

Through its many programs, LAST HOPE, INC. is attempting to reduce the tremendous cat and dog overpopulation problem on Long Island, encourage responsible and economical pet ownership, and transform the public image of the typical pound animal.

We Offer Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Assistance For Dogs and Cats, Low-Cost Pet Vaccination Clinics, Early Neutering Of All Kittens and Puppies, Our Fix-A-Feral Program, Adoption Programs, Community Outreach and Public Awareness Campaigns.

Since its inception, LAST HOPE has been saving dogs and cats on Long Island. We have two adoption centers, one for dogs and one for cats. We are attempting to control the overpopulation problem on Long Island by spaying and neutering every cat, kitten, dog or puppy that we place prior to adoption, offering a low-cost spay/neuter program for feral cats and advocating for the mandatory spay/neuter of all animals in the Island's municipal shelters.

Begun in 2003, LAST HOPE'S FIX-A-FERAL PROGRAM has assisted the public with financial assistance to spay and neuter the feral cats in their neighborhoods. To date, LAST HOPE has assisted with the spay and neuter of at least 8,000 feral cats. This program is vital to the Long Island community and heavily utilized.

WE THANK PET PEEVES, INC. FOR SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY OUTREACH EFFORTS!

LAST HOPE RECOGNIZES THAT THESE ARE TOUGH TIMES AND THAT WE MUST DO EVERYTHING WE CAN TO HELP THOSE PET OWNERS THAT HAVE FALLEN ON TOUGH TIMES TO KEEP THEIR PETS IN THEIR HOME.

BECAUSE OF PET PEEVES' GENEROSITY, LAST HOPE THIS SPRING WILL BE ABLE TO OFFER THE FOLLOWING:

For a limited number of cats and dogs, free spays and neuters if you are on public assistance, disability, unemployment, etc. You will be asked to fill out an application for this service. These applications will be processed on a first come, first serve basis. Please click
here
for questionnaire to download and complete.

From April to June 2010, LAST HOPE will be offering two free rabies and heartworm testing clinics. Dates and locations to be announced.

Dogs, cats and even horses are innocent victims of the economic downturn too. Yet Pet Peeves, Inc. “the voice of Long Island animals” continues to speak up for them. For the last eight years, Pet Peeves has been the non-profit umbrella organization raising funds and awareness for our local animal shelters and rescue groups. Even though times are tough, because of the generosity of Pet Peeves, the four-legged future is looking somewhat brighter.

On March 3rd during “Unleashed” an annual gala at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, Pet Peeves founder, Janine Dion, announced that this year grants totaling $70,000 would support 13 area organizations that help LI’s abused, neglected and homeless dogs, cats, horses and farm animals. The Pet Peeves donations range from one to ten thousand dollars with a current focus on providing relief for local families that cannot afford to care for their animals.

** Thanks to Pet Peeves, Last Hope Animal Rescue, Inc. will be instituting a new two part program to benefit owned pets. Phase 1 will offer free spay/neuter for the dogs and cats of people currently on unemployment, disability or public assistance. Each participant may have up to two pets altered. Applications, available on the Last Hope website or by calling 631-425-1884, will be processed on a first come, first serve basis. Phase II will be two mobile clinics offering the public free dog/cat rabies vaccines and free heartworm tests. The first clinic will probably be held outside the Last Hope Cat Adoption Center in Huntington. Dates have not yet been decided. No applications or appointments will be necessary for these free clinics.

Since its beginning in 2002, Pet Peeves has given more than $600,000 to animal organizations for a variety of other worthwhile projects, including pet therapy and humane education in the schools. In past years Last Hope has received specific monies to purchase new cat cages and more kennels at the Adoption Centers as well as to offer low cost vaccine clinics to the public. Therefore, on behalf of all the furry benefactors, past and present- “Pet Peeves, thank you!”

Top five reasons to adopt your pet:

1. You'll save a life. Sadly, three million healthy and treatable dogs and cats are euthanized each year in the United States simply because too many people give up their pets and too few people adopt from shelters. With more pets entering shelters due to the current economic downturn, it’s more important than ever to consider adoption and give these pets a chance at a loving home.

2. You'll get a healthy pet. Animal shelters are brimming with happy, healthy animals just waiting for someone to take them home. Most shelters examine and give vaccinations to animals when they arrive, and many spay or neuter them before being adopted. In addition to medical care, more and more shelters also screen animals for specific temperaments and behaviors to make sure each family finds the right pet for its lifestyle.

3. You'll save money. Adopting a pet from an animal shelter is much less expensive than buying a pet at a pet store or through other sources. In addition, animals from many shelters are already spayed or neutered and vaccinated, which makes the shelter's fee a real bargain.

4. You'll feel better. Pets have a way of putting a smile on your face and a spring in your step. Not only do animals give you unconditional love, but they have been shown to be psychologically, emotionally and physically beneficial. Caring for a companion animal can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment and lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation in all age groups.

5. You’ll help stop puppy mills. By adopting instead of buying a pet, you can be certain you aren't supporting cruel puppy mills with your money. Puppy mills will continue to operate until people stop purchasing their puppies. Instead of buying, visit your local shelter where you will find healthy, well-socialized puppies and adult dogs—including purebreds—just waiting for that special home—yours.

FERAL vs. STRAY

FERAL CATS are the 'wild' offspring of domestic cats and are primarily the result of pet owners' abandonment or failure to spay and neuter their animals, allowing them to breed uncontrolled. Feral cat 'colonies' can be found behind shopping areas or businesses, in alleys, parks, abandoned buildings, and rural areas. They are elusive and do not trust humans.

Many people assume their animals will survive when they move away and leave them behind. Contrary to popular belief, domestic animals do not automatically return to their "natural" instincts and cannot fend for themselves! Already, U.S. animal shelters are forced to kill an estimated 15 million homeless cats and dogs annually. The alternative to humane euthanasia for almost every stray is a violent end or slow, painful death. Many "throwaways" die mercilessly outdoors from starvation, disease, abuse --- or as food to a predator.

A pair of breeding cats, which can have two or more litters per year, can exponentially produce 420,000 offspring over a seven-year period, and the overpopulation problem carries a hefty price tag. Statewide, more than $50 million (largely from taxes) is spent by animal control agencies and shelters for cat-related expenses.

Studies have proven that TNR or trapping-neutering-and releasing is the single most successful method of stabilizing and maintaining healthy feral cat colonies with the least possible cost to local governments and residents, while providing the best life for the animals themselves.

A STRAY CAT IS NOT A FERAL CAT...A stray is a cat who has been abandoned or who has strayed from home and become lost...Stray cats can usually be re-socialized and adopted...A feral cat is an un-socialized cat...Either he was born outside and never lived with humans, or he is a house cat who has strayed from home and over time has thrown off the effects of domestication and reverted to a wild state...They should not be taken to local shelters to be adopted...Feral kittens can be adopted if tamed and placed in homes...First they must be socialized in their first weeks of life...If they aren't handled in time, they will remain feral and un-adoptable.

PLEASE SPAY AND NEUTER!!

Just get on the ball
